When you think back to those high school days, it is amazing how no one actually listened to the kids who had something to say or were actually knowledgeable on a particular matter; kids were drawn to the “popular boy” or the “popular girl” and would only listen or take advice from them. I am not criticizing, I was actually more playing the popularity game myself… but then I grew up and faced the real World.

When it comes to looking to the web for knowledge, the easiest and best option is of course to go for a search engine and there is no more popular search engine that our beloved Google. But let’s take a second look at how Google identify and ranks the results to our precious searches.

By relevance? Yes of course, but this is not the main criteria for results to appear at the top of the result page or even on the first or first few results pages.Google has chosen to go for site popularity to rank its results and listings. What defines a site popularity is mainly the number of external links to this site from even more popular sites… Where am I going with this? Well, the most popular sites are of course social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter and these are themselves driven by their members popularity… So in a nutshell, you could be searching for the truth on a matter or detailed explanation of something and end up scrolling through tens or hundreds of popular link mentioning the topic you are after but will think to have had an answer by Google page 2 or even will be discouraged by Google page 3 before hitting the real gem, the real answer, the actual information and facts you were looking for which timidly showed up on page 6 or 7 of the listings returned by Google.

Of course, this led to the emergence of whole new industry and of Web Public Relations agencies who will create Facebook profile, Facebook pages, Twitters, mySpace, blogs and god knows what for their customer to get the new gold, the new grail, to appear at the top of Google’s listings. This in itself is not bad at all, it forces companies to redefine their marketing approaches and communicate to the internet community to become their customers or prospects popular buddies and in the end to get closer to their marketplace and for their market place to get closer to them.

But please let’s take this with a pinch of salt and let’s hope that Apple will come up with a search engine, a search engine that will focus on ergonomics, relevance and functionality… Of course they have to announce their tablet before that, but maybe one day.

ChromeOS on Google TableSeth Weintraub’s post on Computerworld today (Watch out iPad:Google’s Chrome OS tablet is coming soon) points out that Google’s Chrome OS has been showcased running on tablet and the Android Vs iPhone competition will soon be extended to Google Tablet Vs iPad hence shaping the upcoming clash of the titans between Apple and Google.

It is interesting to witness the emerging new era and computing and mobile communication shaping around these two giants. One can even start speculating that Microsoft although still by far the leader in “standard computers” will soon be a community from the past rather than a force driving forward. This competition is godsend to us users as it will spur a raft of technology and functionality which will soon become must have for companies and end users alike hence shaping a world of opportunity for the next decade.

Of course, Microsoft and “standard” manufacturers will soon try to get on board but will probably be mere followers providing budget copies of Apple and Google offsprings.

Jump to Mobilise your workforce, jump on the tablet bandwagon for some examples of productivity gain achieved through tablets.

HTML5 logoWith the Flash blooper appearing in Apple’s iPad ads last week and the Apple all hand meeting held on Friday, we now know that we won’t be seeing Flash in our Apple iPhones, iPod Touchs and iPads in the foreseeable future.

Steve Jobs blamed Adobe’s “buggy” implementation of Flash for the Mac and clearly stated that the company was putting its eggs into the HTML5 basket.

What does HTML5 give us? It gives us the same functionality as Flash and as Sacha pointed out in its comments on the iPhone Vs Android post, HTML5 gives us a way to kill 2 birds with one stone and target both Apple devices and Android devices with the same code for web apps.

Unfortunately, Steve Jobs has not read my first post on Apple coming up with a search engine to counter Google’s popularity > relevance search engine and mentioned that Apple is not competing with Google in the search engine market but rather that Google is looking at killing the iPhone with Android. Sad but understandable, we will have to stick to Google and keep scrolling through pages of popular results before getting to the relevant result that we are all looking for.

As part of this, Steve also mentioned that the next iPhone will be an A+ update which will let Google and others light years behind. Looking forward to what’s in stock here. We may all have to wait for the Developer’s conference in the middle of the Year but it should be well worth it. The next update will also probably give the iPad the power that we were looking for during the product announcement on the 27th.

Stay tuned, there is a world of opportunity coming towards up and of course, brush up those HTML5 skills!!!

The current craze for mobile applications is a massive opportunity for startups and individuals to jump on the band wagon and create a successful business or at least an important source of revenue. The dilemma is which platform to develop for.

The AppStore for the iPhone (and now iPad) offers access to millions and an exponentially growing number of prospects but is however already crowded with an a very large number of applications covering every functionality one currently can think of. Coming up with the “Killer App” already seems like a challenge and apart from games, most developers are actually pursuing the route of making better versions/copies of existing applications.

The stringent and somewhat excessive control that Apple places on the AppStore might also be a hurdle for startups and developers who might be investing a very large amount of time developing applications which will end up being rejected by Cupertino. Don’t get me wrong, the iPhone remains my favorite mobile platform and I can only wish to see the AppStore exponential growth carrying on and even accelerating. However, if one thinks of being a newbie on the mobile App development market, there maybe another route to go through first before attempting the iPhone market.

Android, although already a one year old solution is still to pick up the pace of the iPhone and its AppStore and may therefore be a better option for new entrants. Android currently offers a smaller number of prospects but with the system being adopted by more and more handset manufacturer will soon pick up a decent share of the smartphone market place. The current advantage of Android is that the number of applications available is still limited compare to the iPhone, therefore offering less competition for new ideas (or for porting ideas from existing iPhone apps… but I never said this…) and also does not impose the stringent controls that Apple imposes.

Entrepreneurship in the mobile application space is still a lucrative solution, however, depending on the size of one’s shoulder, Android may appear a better solution than the iPhone at the moment.

If entrepreneurship is not  what you are thinking of and you are still looking to become a mobile app developer on salary for an existing company wishing to offer an application to its existing customers then the iPhone still is the technology to go for with many company already offering dedicated iPhone apps to view accounts, pay bills, stay up to date with latest news and upgrade existing products and services, but keep in mind even there Android will soon be a necessary channel as well.

The growing competition between the iPhone and Android promises a landfill of opportunities for entrepreneur, companies and users that will keep getting better and better for a very long time still.
