Following on from the success of the iFund, the AppFund has been launched providing investment funds for startups and entrepreneurs looking to develop innovative future hits application for the iPad.

More than being an iPod Touch Mega, the iPad will evolve alongside the quality of the apps being developed and will undoubtedly become an unavoidable source of information for the public and an invaluable tool for businesses.

It is now time to put our thinking caps on and submit our ideas to apply for some funding and change the face of portable media for the years to come.

I have now had the chance to test my iPhone 4 to the max and my first impressions are wow, wow and wow, “it changes everything… again!”.

Retina Display

The killer feature that catches your eyes straight away is the incredible Retina Display. I will never look at screens the same way now that I have experienced Retina Display. Text is so crisp that even a full page completely zoomed in is readable, photos and videos look stunning and make you immediately forget that you are looking at such a small screen. Just this feature sometimes make my one month old iPad feel obsolete despite its amazing screen and definitely beats any other portable device.

Battery

Finally, Apple drastically improved the iPhone battery life and I can now use my iPhone with 3G turrned on and get about the same battery life as I used to get from my 3GS with 3G turned off.

Camera

Here again, we finally have a camera worth being called a camera. Images are very crisp and even without turning on the flash, we can get some very decent shots worth figuring in our iPhoto libraries. The video captured in HD are also stunning and you can truly capture those moments as they happen without having to run to catch the camcorder from the gadget drawer at the risk of missing the action.

The infamous “Death Grip”

I must be doing something wrong because in the few days I have had the iPhone 4, I have not been able to experience the handset most famous feature… I am thinking of checking in with my GP and have some skin removed from my hands and fingers or I will not be able to justify the addition of the famous bumper to my purchase.

Design

The iPhone 4 sports a very slick and modern design which makes the beautiful 3G and 3GS look like antiques. It does take a few minutes though to get used to the new form factor and the flat back and sharp edges. In a nutshell, if you have not seen one, rush to the nearest dealer and experience one for yourself, then you will almost surely put your name on the list to get one as soon as the new batch arrives in a store near you.

Here some screenshots to give you an idea of how World Flights (apologies for the self-publicity) look on the iPhone 4 compared to my old 3GS, but here again you should see it for yourself on the device itself.

Microsoft launches bid to compete with Apple in tablet market with new devices that will run versions of forthcoming OS

The tablet computers run the new touch-friendly Windows 8 operating system. Link to this video Microsoft launched a series of tablet computers on Monday as the tech giant fought to regain ground lost to Apple’s iPad.Having announced last week that the firm was set to make a key announcement, Steve BallmerMicrosoft‘s chief executive, unveiled two new tablet PCs at a closely guarded press event in Los Angeles. He said the new devices – called Surface – were part of a “whole new family of devices” the company is developing. The devices will run versions of Microsoft’s forthcoming Windows 8 operating system, a system the company hopes will allow it to make up ground in mobilecomputing lost to Apple and Google’s Android.

“We want to give Windows 8 its own companion hardware innovations,” Ballmer said.

Analysts gave the as yet unpriced devices a cautious welcome. “From a design perspective it looks great,” said Carolina Milanesi at Gartner.

She said the device looked like a serious competitor to Apple’s best-selling iPad but success would depend on price and the apps available for the devices.

The 9.3mm thick device has a magnesium case, features a 10.6-inch HD widescreen display, an integrated kickstand and weighs less than a kilo (1.5lbs). The device comes with a detachable keyboard and trackpad that attach magnetically to the tablet.

Apple has so far seen off most of its competitors in the tablet computersmarket including Blackberry maker Research in Motion and Hewlett Packard. Amazon’s Kindle has challenged Apple’s dominance but with a far less versatile and powerful machine. In 2011 Apple sold over 40 million iPads, out of worldwide tablet sales of 60 million.

At the presentation, Ballmer and Steven Sinofsky, the president of Microsoft’s Windows division, stressed Surface’s computing power.

Sinofsky called the device a “tablet that’s a great PC – a PC that’s a great tablet”.

Milanesi said the Surface might appeal to business users already used to Microsoft software, an area where Apple has been making inroads with iPads and iPhones. “It is certainly a very competitive product in that space,” she said.

The company did not reveal pricing or release dates but at the event Sinofsky said it would be “priced like comparable tablets.” Milanesi said she expected the Surface to cost less than $699 (£446) in the US and be launched before the all-important Christmas selling season.

The tech firm has a spotty record in launching its own hardware products and has usually left the making of hardware to partners such as Dell or Hewlett Packard. While Microsoft’s Xbox video gaming system is a world leader, its iPod rival Zune and Kin telephones proved disasters.

While the Phoenix Suns decided earlier this month to purchase Samsung’s Galaxy Tab for interactive playbooks, a report from Denver Post this morning detailed the Denver Bronco’s decision to switch its 500-page playbooks to iPad versions.

This season, the team will hand out iPads that feature the week’s game plan, scouting reports, video clips and other relevant data… A key component to the software is that it runs in the background even when a player is not reviewing the playbook, enabling the app to determine when a coach has an update to push to players, such as a new short-yardage and goal-line package… When a player isn’t connected to Wi-Fi, the app will update using the iPad’s high-speed connection on Verizon’s LTE network.

The tablet war has started and promises us a world of opportunity, how will companies make use of these to empower and mobilise their workforce?

At FPX, we are solving the complex products/services configure, price, quote problem for companies; namely, some enterprise offerings are so complex that they require the sales persons to be working with a number of technical consultant to understand a customer’s requirements, identify the products or solutions to match those requirements, then configure these identified products or solutions to the customer’s specific needs, produce a valid quote and finally once the quote is accepted transform this information into a fulfillable order. This process often requires multiple iterations to reach an accurate and valid order with high rejection rates and therefore long delays in completing a quote. Our intuitive and rules driven interface hides this complexity from the end user (either a sales rep, call center agent or customer through a self service portal) and provides a clean quote the first time; the time to deliver a quote to a customer is reduced from days to hours or in very complex cases from weeks to a couple of days.

Using the above example as a case study, it is easy to see the impact that a table device could have on accelerating this process even further and not only guaranteeing a clean quote the first time, but all of this could be achieved right on the customer premises with a small footprint device built with ergonomics and the web in mind. For the iPhone or other smartphone, we could already achieve this but by providing a smartphone specific look and feel that will maximize the use of the small screen, a tablet will give us the real estate to provide the user experience we are providing for desktop or laptop computers.

Of course, this could also be achieved on a laptop, but lets face it, looks and presence are essential in a sales cycle and the more appealing the device, the more chance of bonding between the sales rep and the end customer.

Back in the days, mobility for the sales force was hard to achieve as sales and order entry systems required a local copy of the system on a user’s laptop with all the synchronization nightmares it entailed. Today, 3G or WIFI make synchronization a thing of the past and the device only requires a web browser to access enterprise services.
